I think Patricia Pollaco was trying to teach us that even if someone is mean to other people that doesn't mean you have to be mean to them.

The children wanted to earn his trust and prove that they did not throw the eggs and yell at Mr. Kodinski's back door. I think the author was trying to teach us that if you do something nice for others they'll do something nice for you.

I think that the author Patricia Polacco was trying to teach us, the readers, that when you lose someone's trust by being really mean it is really hard to get it back.

Because he led a really hard life and they learned the lesson that they should be really good to people no matter how old they are. The author was trying to teach us that you should always be good to people and don't make fun of people.
